Gulnaar means flowering and Chandrika means moonlight, and the piece takes its shape from the second: the centrepiece is a crescent, hung horizontally so it reads as a moon lying on its back. The form comes from South Indian temple jewellery, where a crescent below a long chain is one of the oldest and most recognisable silhouettes in the tradition.
A fine gold-toned chain carries small ivory-toned clusters along its whole length, broken on each side by pale aqua ovals and a small rosette in deep pink-red. At the bottom sits the crescent, its gold-toned frame outlined in a row of tiny ivory-toned detail and filled with deep pink-red petal shapes around a bottle-green oval at the centre. Below the crescent falls a dense fringe of fine gold-toned chain, each strand tipped with a small bell cap. The matching earrings hang from a carved gold-toned leaf and end in the same chain fringe.
The fringe moves constantly, which makes it a good choice for occasions where you are dancing or on your feet: garba, sangeet, a temple visit, or a festive lunch. It sits at mid-chest, so it layers well over a plain kurta or a simple silk blouse. Aqua and pink-red against a gold-toned finish read best on mustard, teal, off-white and pastel outfits rather than on deep reds.
