Meenakari is the art of painting enamel onto metal, and it is what gives this set its colour. The Veena Meenakari Gold-Toned Kundan Necklace Set takes the second half of its name from that work and the first from the veena, the long-necked instrument of Indian classical music. The connection is in the making rather than the shape: both ask for a steady hand and reward patience, and both are judged on how well the small things are finished.
The green on this piece is meenakari, painted enamel, not a stone. It runs as a fine line around each bezel and opens into a broad dark green-toned field in the centre medallion. The collar is a gold-toned choker, narrow at the clasp and deepening to the centre front, packed as a mosaic of clear flat-cut Polki-style stones in cushion, oval and pear outlines, two to three rows deep. The medallion rings a clear centre stone with tiny round stones, then the enamel field carrying red-toned cabochons, then a gold-toned rim, with five large stones fanning below it as a scalloped hem. The matching danglers repeat the medallion almost exactly.
This is a bridal and big-occasion piece. The choker sits at the base of the neck and needs a wide or open neckline to show properly, so pair it with a bridal lehenga, a Banarasi or silk sari, or a deep-necked Anarkali. Wear it to a wedding, reception, sangeet or a large Diwali function. The red and green against warm gold-toned metal is traditional dressing, and it holds up under photography and evening light.
